Jonny Dempsey has recently joined Warrant Group's Trade Sales team. Here he describes how the role requires a thinking 'outside the box' approach. Just don't ask him why his nickname is Jigsaw!
Can you describe your role and highlight what you enjoy most about It?
After working with the Supply Chain team for three years, I recently moved to Trade Sales liaising with our overseas partners. With responsibility to develop new business with our global partner network, the role really requires a 'thinking outside the box' approach, especially when it comes to venturing into new trade lanes.
We work closely with Warrant Group's sea, air and road freight operation teams, handling a wide variety of commodities for both imports and exports. I'm really excited about my new role and am looking forward to the months ahead!
What have been the major developments/key issues in your field during recent years?
The shipping industry has experienced a huge transformation over the last year or so with the creation of the newly formed alliances.
Alongside the collapse of Hanjin Shipping, there have been real challenges around capacity, rising freight rates and changes in popular scheduled routes. Warrant Group has been monitoring these changes closely and it looks like things are starting to settle down a bit now.
What are likely to be the big challenges in the future?
As the country prepares to exit the EU, there is a lot of uncertainty around free trade agreements and tariffs. It is very difficult to predict what may happen and Warrant Group will be keeping a close eye on how it progresses. As Brexit unfolds, we will work closely with customers to ensure a smooth transition.
Besides a successful career in global logistics, what was your dream job when you were a child?
Although I was a keen tennis player as a child I wanted to be a football player. I always played footy in our back garden imagining myself scoring in front of the Kop like Robbie Fowler.
It was never ever going to happen though! I think getting the nickname 'jigsaw' (someone who falls to pieces in the box) on the company football tournament sums it up!
Name three things you can't live without
Liverpool Football Club, holidays and my Ma's cooking!
